Steel detailing is the process of creating drawings with complete details that will enable a fabricator to create the steel framework for a construction project. In steel detailing, the detailer is responsible for creating drawings containing all the details that serve as a guiding document allowing the detailer to cut and weld necessary steel members together.

A detailer picks up inputs for the drawings from the architectural and structural engineering drawings to gain knowledge of the overall design intent of the building. Using this knowledge, a detailer creates a set of accurate drawings for the purpose of steel fabrication. In most cases, the drawings would also have the layout instruction that will allow the fabricator to install and erect the steel framework.
